In Reply To Ball-Bearing Turbo Cartridges (not CHRAs) - Anyone? posted by evan_aggie on March 25, 2015 at 11:35 PM

Message the rotating portion can only be balanced by a very expensive machine, it must be balanced because the ultra high rpm that a turbo functions at multiplies the weight of even the most minute imbalances to very heavy imbalances at peak rpm's which will damage the bearings and seals. So even if one were to index mark the shaft with the nut and the nut with the compressor wheel, that still doesn't take care of the change in balance that may have happened since the turbo was first manufactured. Often there is a small amount of wear on the wheels that is not visible due to heat or hard particles hitting them, also exhaust deposits on the turbine will not deposit perfectly evenly. If the turbo failed there is a good chance it's because there's an imbalance anyway so indexing the rotating assembly as it was before the rebuild will most likely fail again shortly after the rebuild anyway. Even the marking of a sharpie throws the balance off slightly...... although not enough to damage it alone as there is a very small acceptable margin of imbalance, it may be enough to add to the wrong side of an already existing imbalance, to the point that it WOULD be enough to damage the turbo. Bottom line: don't rebuild a turbo yourself unless you're willing to accept the possibility of the turbo failing..... which means- losing the money for the rebuild kit ON TOP OF having to buy another whole turbo since the housings will most likely be damaged, having to pull the motor to replace the turbos, AND having to clean the shrapnel out of your IC piping, AND God forbid any of that shrapnel makes into your motor...... I don't know about you but I would happily pay full price for a new replacement center cartridge than risk all of the above.
